Since June
2011, I am a researcher staff at the Osservatorio
di Astrofisica e Scienza dello Spazio (OAS)
in Bologna. OAS is part of the National
Institute for Astrophysics (INAF).
On May
2007 I successfully completed my PhD as part of
the INTEGRAL
survey team in the astronomy group at the University
of Southampton (UK). Thesis:
Fast transient sources observed with INTEGRAL
From Oct
1994 to Oct 2003 I studied for my degree
in Astronomy at the University
of
Bologna
Thesis :
identification of EGRET gamma-ray sources with
BeppoSAX (italian version)
On May 2010 I have been awarded the Zeldovich
Medal
from the
Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) for
my studies on Supergiant
Fast X-ray Transients
Citation for
award
The 2010 Zeldovich Medal from COSPAR Scientific
Commission E is awarded to Vito Sguera
"for his research on the new
class of
soft gamma-ray sources, Supergiant Fast X-Ray
Transients,
of seminal
importance
for high energy astrophysical studies"

Research
interests
My research is in the field of X-ray/gamma-ray astronomy,
specifically it is mainly focussed on studying the
so-called Supergiant
Fast X-ray Transients (SFXTs) which are
a new class of High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs)
recently discovered by the ESA INTEGRAL
satellite
